Who we are

Mother and Son duo Meredith and Tom Green are dedicated to ensuring kids in foster care are not educationally disadvantaged. When schools were closed and kids were forced to learn online throughout the Covid 19 pandemic, it became obvious to both Meredith and Tom that kids in foster care were falling behind given many didn’t have access to technology, and as the world becomes more technologically driven, they knew this gap in resource availability needed to close in order to give all children equal opportunity.

Meredith and Tom live on the Gold Coast and are well connected within the Gold Coast community, and have already had a huge outpouring of help since Gifted first opened its doors.

What we do

Gifted is an orgaisation providing educational opportunities to children living in the foster care system. Research shows that children living in out of home care are at signifcantly higher risk of having less desireable educational outcomes. The inability to access education is a key contributing factor to future life outcomes as an adult.

At Gifted Org we make use of pre loved tablets, IPads, and Laptops by refurbishing and rehoming to children living in forster care who otherwise would be missing out on the opportunity to participate in online class activities, complete online homework, interact socially with their peers and engaging in social and recreational activities online.

Why we do it

The recent COVID-19 health pandemic highlighted the gaps in education between children living in out of home care and those living at home. Many children living in out of home care were not able to attend classes like their class mates who had access to technology. This resulted in very limited learning during this time. Added to this was the inability for children to maintain contact with their peers which reinforces the inequality and social disadvantage already experienced.

At Gifted we believe that the foundations of learning are pivitol in children reaching their full potential and that access to these devices in the primary phase of learning prevents gaps forming and established a strong foundation in which children build their knowledge, skills, confidence and social connectedness.

How it works

Follow the easy steps below to make a difference to a child’s education

Search your home

If you’ve got an old iPad, Tablet or Laptop lying around home that you no longer need or use, we’d love to hear from you! These devices must still be in working order. When gifting these devices, we’d also appreciate any accessories that came with it such as it’s charger or docking station. If they no longer work or you’ve lost it, that’s OK too, we will organise a replacement.

Write a note

We welcome you to provide a short note of encouragement that will be provided to the child receiving your device.

Drop off

If you’re a Gold Coast local, please drop off your device at one of our drop off locations. If you don’t live on the Gold Coast then please send us a message here and we can organise it to be delivered. When dropping off your device, don’t forget to securely attach the charging cables or any accessories to your device.

Reset

After we have received the device we will do a full factory reset, so please make sure you have already saved any files you may need. Where possible we will also undertake a refurbishment of the devices exterior, on any small or superficial damage. If your device is damaged, please get in contact with us fist.

Make it sparkle

There’s nothing more exciting than unboxing a brand new Laptop or Tablet, and we want the kids to experience that feeling…even if their devices aren’t brand new. So after we’ve undertaken the reset and refurb, we’ll give the device some TLC and make it sparkle! We do this by giving it a full clean, adding a case to the Tablets, and placing them in specially made Gifted boxes.

Out for delivery

This is the most rewarding part of the whole process, where the devices go out for delivery to their new homes. The process of delivery will differ depending on circumstances, but where possible a member of our team will hand deliver each package so we can help with the device set up and any questions. Then it’s over to the kids…
